Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks associated with physiotherapy treatment in vancouver ?

There are very few risks associated with Physiotherapy treatment if your program is build for your body by a specialized practitioner.

What are the grades of joint mobilization?

Joint mobilization uses a five-grade system developed by Geoffrey Maitland. Grade I involves small-amplitude movement at the beginning of the range of motion for pain relief, while Grade II uses large-amplitude movement within the mid-range, also for pain management. Grade III applies large-amplitude movement that reaches into tissue resistance to increase mobility, and Grade IV uses small-amplitude movement at the end of the available range to target specific restrictions. Grade V is a small-amplitude, high-velocity thrust, which is actually considered manipulation rather than mobilization.

How long does joint mobilization take to see results?

Results vary considerably by person and condition. Some people experience immediate relief after one session, while others may need several weeks of consistent treatment. Generally, you might notice some improvement within 2-4 weeks of regular treatment, but conditions like chronic stiffness or long-standing joint issues typically require longer treatment periods—sometimes 6-8 weeks or more.

How long does manual therapy last ?

The lasting effects depend on several factors including the underlying condition, severity, your activity level, and whether you’re doing complementary exercises. Effects from a single session might last anywhere from a few hours to several days. With consistent treatment and proper self-care, improvements can become more permanent as mobility increases and pain decreases.

How often should I receive manual therapy ?

Typical treatment schedules range from 1-3 times per week initially, then tapering to less frequent sessions as you improve. Acute conditions might need more frequent visits at first, while chronic issues often respond well to 1-2 times weekly. Your physical therapist will adjust frequency based on your response to treatment.
